Los Altos students have conducted ASB elections, with different students from three different age groups participating in becoming class president.
Students were anticipating the results of the election as they took place March 27, 2026, while results took time to be announced. The outcome determined who will become next school year’s class president for the class of 2029, 2028, and 2027. As for the sophomore and freshman class Makeila Portillo and Andrea Martin were announced as the winners.
Freshman Andrea Martin demonstrates her passion for leadership and empathy. She emphasizes that being class president is about making classmates feel valued and included.
Andrea Martin said, “I feel like I always have wanted to be a leader and I learned over time I can be very good at it, and I value making other people feel heard and accepted so I wanted my fellow classmates to feel that way.”
Martin shows her understanding of her peers as she uses social media campaigns as a different approach in connecting with students.
Martin said, “I decided to use social media as a way to advertise myself. I had my friends and many classmates repost my campaign, and with some time I started gaining more attention to my posts.”
Voicing her long term commitment to leadership, Martin focuses on empowering others, and shows that she wants to use her role to encourage students from Los Altos to speak up and be heard.
Martin said, “I think what makes me a good candidate is because I’ve always been interested in ASB type of stuff since the 4th grade, and it’s always been a part of me. I really want to make people feel special and help them to learn to use their voice to help speak up for those who do not have the power or like ability to.”
Sophomore Makeila Portillo, reflects her dedication to her classmates. She views leadership as a service to prioritize her peers rather than personal gain.
Makeila Portillo said, “Running for class president was important to me because I have a lot of passion for what I do in regards to wanting what’s best for my class so I just wanted to be that person who creates the best opportunities for everyone.”
Portillo, like Martin, combines creativity within planning her campaign. Portillos adds a personal touch with digital promotion, demonstrating how candidates balance tradition and modern approaches to reach their peers.
Portillo said, “Different strategies I used were making social media posts to advocate for myself. I found that making trendy TikToks was helpful in connecting with my peers aswell.”
Portillo then portrays herself as a fundamental leader for the class of 2029.
Makeila Portillo said, “I believe myself to be a good candidate because I am willing to put my best foot forward to make this upcoming year the best possible for my peers and I am willing to make sacrifices for the benefits of my class.”
