Los Altos high school will once again host its annual powderpuff event, where girls will be playing flag football and boys from the football team will serve as coaches. Students participating in the event will practice football skills and compete against different grade levels.
` The news of the event sparked the interest of many flag football athletes, as they will now have the opportunity to compete within a larger audience. For many, events like powderpuff provide new opportunities for athletes to compete, improve their abilities, and contribute to a fun school tradition.
Alongside discussing teamwork and competition, Quintero discussed her personal motivation, and expectations for participating in Powderpuff.
Sophia Quintero said, “I expect to be able to improve my own abilities by playing flag football in powderpuff, and to build friendships and stronger bonds in order to create a strong successful team.”
Quintero explained that building strong connections with teammates is just as important as improving individual skills.
Quintero said, “I believe that the sophomore team will win because we have a strong bond and understand each other’s parts in playing the sport effectively as well.”
Following this, Quintero also talked about why she continues to participate personally in Powderpuff.
Quintero said, “I am participating in the event because I love playing the sport, and it will help me improve for upcoming games. I also want to spend time with my friends and build new friendships with my teammates through shared experiences together.”
Quintero’s perspective emphasizes that Powderpuff is not only individual skill development, but also a way to form skills in communication and relationships through the bonds of teammates.
Sara Rae Mendoza also shared her connection to Powderpuff and what the event means to her.
Sara Rae Mendoza said, “Powderpuff has become a part of the school year I began to look forward to with my friends. The event itself is beneficial toward the boys football team as it’s a fundraiser, but it means even more to me”
Along with discussing personal growth in Powderpuff, Mendoza reflects the competitive aspect built through the event.
Mendoza said, “I first participated in Powderpuff my freshman year, and thought it was so much fun. The game itself is very competitive, which also allows me to persevere despite the difficulties in such a fun environment.”
Mendoza shows that Powderpuff is both a fun and competitive event that motivates her to push through challenges. This highlights that the school event helps develop Mendoza’s own perseverance and resilience while still enjoying the experience.
