For many students at LAHS, Cabaret Night has long been one of the year’s most anticipated performances. Known for highlighting amazing soloists, it has traditionally been the main opportunity for individual voices to shine.
However, with a growing choir program and more students eager to perform, not everyone could secure a spot in the limited lineup. This year, the challenge led to an unexpected but meaningful solution that expanded opportunities for solos to performers.
In response to so many well-done auditions, choir director Mr. Fahey introduced a brand new concert dedicated entirely to solos. The event created a space where more students could perform individually without the constraints of Cabaret Night’s limited schedule.
Unlike Cabaret Night, which also features a performance from every choir in the program and a showcase of LA Dynamix’s full competition set, this concert focused solely on solos. As a result, the night highlighted and celebrated a wider range of voices, styles, and musical choices across the LAHS choir program.
Students say the decision made the experience feel more rewarding, especially knowing it came directly from the strength of their auditions. It also created a sense of recognition for the effort and talent shown during the selection process.
“I feel like it gave more people a chance to actually be heard,” said junior Vianney Miranda Rivera. “I was able to perform a solo, and it meant a lot because normally not everyone gets the opportunity to sing at Cabaret.”
Others noted that the concert felt more inclusive while still maintaining the excitement of performing live. The range of voices and song choices helps create a night that felt both diverse and meaningful.
“I really liked how everyone had their own moment,” said junior Nixon Fuentes. “I got to perform a solo too, and as the closing act, it felt less stressful but still really special being on stage.”
The introduction of this solo night concert reflects how the choir program is evolving to support its students. By recognizing the strength of this year’s auditions, the program managed to create a space where more performers could be celebrated.
As the LAHS Choir continues to grow, students say they hope this new concert becomes a lasting tradition.
Fuentes said, “It just shows that there’s room for everyone’s voice.”
